John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management / Harold Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies

Mission

The Harold Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, a recognized leader in entrepreneurial education and research, oversees all teaching, research, extracurricular, and community activities related to entrepreneurship at UCLA.

Working closely with its Board of Advisors, the Price Center's goal is to provide a set of academic and extracurricular experiences that advance both the theory and practice of entrepreneurship.

At The Anderson School, MBA students may choose to take several advanced electives that focus on entrepreneurial or emerging ventures. These courses include venture initiation, small business management, financing emerging enterprises, and business plan writing. Field studies (six-month consulting projects by teams of three to five students) may be conducted with entrepreneurial firms as well. The Entrepreneur Association (EA), the largest student organization at The Anderson School, sponsors more than thirty extracurricular activities that provide involvement opportunities for students, entrepreneurs, and business developers. These programs include noon speakers, an annual conference on entrepreneurship and a venture proposal competition. Particularly innovative programs are the Venture Fellows Program and the Student Investment Fund, which provide hands-on experience in the venture capital and investment management fields.

The Center for Research in Entrepreneurship, Business Development, and Innovation organizes conferences and disseminates information based on the latest management research. The Institute for Entrepreneurial Education offers industry-specific executive development programs. Past programs have targeted minority and women-owned businesses, construction contractors, vendors to utility companies, and the directors of Head Start preschool programs.
The Price Center resides in Entrepreneurs Hall, one of the six buildings in the new Anderson School education complex.

History

Entrepreneurial courses were first offered at UCLA in the early 1970s by Professor Hans Schollhammer. In 1987, the Entrepreneurial Studies Center was established as an interdisciplinary study center under the direction of Dr. Alfred E. Osborne, Jr., Ph. D.

The Center received its initial funding through a one million-dollar challenge grant provided by the Price Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. Upon completion of an additional capital campaign, the Center was officially dedicated as the Harold Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and moved into Entrepreneurs Hall in 1995. The Center has funded in excess of 20 named fellowships, programs, and faculty chair endowments.
