N. Stern School of Business / Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies Mission The Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies is
dedicated to conducting and supporting entrepreneurship research and education.
The Center underwrites research grants for faculty members and doctoral
students, conducts conferences for scholars and practitioners, engages
in specialized executive education, and produces a variety of publications
that contribute to understanding the entrepreneurial process and the public
policy and educational issues associated with encouraging new enterprise
development. The Center also offers co-curricular programs that are designed
to complement course-related learning and to encourage the desire among
Stern students to create economic enterprise through new ventures, either
in start-up or established businesses. History The establishment of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Stern School was first proposed in December of 1982 by Professor Zena Block and endorsed by a faculty task force that began to lay the groundwork for an academic program. A major objective of the Center was to stimulate scholarly research in the area of entrepreneurship and to bring the study of entrepreneurship into the mainstream of business academia. In May of 1983, the Price Institute made a commitment of financial support for the center. Mr. Price felt that his business school education hadn't equipped him adequately to run his family business; he had to learn by doing. Price wanted to fund entrepreneurial studies to help prepare students interested in running their own businesses. The Price Institute today continues to contribute generously to the Center in support of its mission and goals. During the years that followed the birth of the Center,
interest in entrepreneurship among Stern School students increased significantly.
In addition to introducing new MBA courses in entrepreneurship, the Center
initiated a number of important co-curricular programs, including the
Internal Venturing Forum, the Entrepreneurial Skills Seminar Series, and
the Entrepreneurial Training Retreat. To bring the study of Entrepreneurship
into the mainstream of business school academia, in 1985 the Center launched
the publication of the Journal of Business Venturing, which is
now widely recognized as the premier journal in the field. Research proposal
funding and Best Paper on Entrepreneurship Research Awards were also introduced
to stimulate research and publication in the area of entrepreneurship.
The center puts on a conference each year for the
community to help entrepreneurs gain knowledge and contacts. See the web
